Our Mission

The WV ATC’s Allies Supporting Autism Spectrum Diversity project works to inform and educate individuals or groups who wish to provide a safe and accepting environment for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our mission is to advocate for diversity and promote understanding in order to support and develop awareness.

Our Vision

To create and foster an environment of understanding, acceptance, and support though the education of community members and promotion of awareness on a national scale.

What is an ally supporting autism spectrum diversity?

A person who provides an understanding, supportive, and safe environment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, while promoting their awareness and knowledge to peers and other professionals.

The ASASD Sticker

The Allies Supporting Autism Spectrum Diversity sticker is a visual message that trainees are trustworthy and supportive advocates for autism . The symbol also means that adverse comments or actions regarding individuals with autism will be addressed by allies in an educational and informative manner. The ASASD symbol displayed on the sticker was created by Marshall University's Warren Patrick. Stickers are provided to new allies post-training to display with pride.

Our Learning Outcomes

Participants will leave with a general understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder, along with support strategies and best practices of how to be an ally. Trainees will recognize the daily challenges that individuals on the spectrum face. Trained allies will know how to provide understanding and promote the acceptance of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder in their professional and personal lives in order to spread the ally mentality.

The Training

The Allies Supporting Autism Spectrum Diversity training involves a 1-1.5 hour interactive presentation guided by a Prezi slideshow. Trainers welcome audience participation, while time for Q & A is allotted.
